Insurance Enrollment
Since 2014, VHO has been assisting Ryan White eligible Virginia ADAP clients enroll in health insurance plans available through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Federal Marketplace. During the year, VHO helps eligible clients with Special Enrollment and may soon be assisting with Medicaid enrollments made possible by the Medicaid Expansion in Virginia.
Improving lives, saving money, and supporting communities.
Since 2014, VHO has enrolled approximately 1500 Ryan White eligible Virginia ADAP individuals in health insurance plans offered through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace.
Studies have shown that individuals with HIV disease who have access to health insurance enjoy better health outcomes including well-controlled HIV disease, decreased mortality, and decreased risk of transmission to others.
Since the introduction of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs) have made a concerted effort to enroll uninsured individuals in ACA health insurance plans as both a cost-saving strategy and to increase patient access to care.
A recently published study, “Determinants of facilitated health insurance enrollment for patients with HIV disease, and impact of insurance enrollment on targeted health outcomes”, evaluated the impact of ADAP-facilitated health insurance and on health outcomes and found enough evidence to suggest that programs, including Virginia ADAP, continue to prioritize facilitated insurance enrollment strategies to ensure continued improvement in health outcomes.
